SICK UM30-212111 | Ultrasonic Distance Sensor — M30 Threaded, 65–350mm, PNP NO/NC, 9–30V DC, 12Hz, Display, IP65/67

Overview

The SICK UM30-212111 is a mid-range ultrasonic distance sensor from SICK's UM30 family — a product line described by SICK as a universal application solver, and for good reason.

The 65–350mm operating range (with the acoustic beam capable of reaching 600mm in the limiting range), combined with a switchable PNP output, an integrated LED display, multi-mode operation, and the ability to synchronise up to 50 individual sensors on the same installation, makes this a genuinely versatile unit for detection tasks that would challenge simpler proximity technologies.

The M30 housing is a well-established industry standard for proximity sensors.

Mounting in a standard 30mm installation hole positions the UM30-212111 at the same physical location one might have previously occupied with a large-format inductive sensor — but the UM30 detects at distances and with materials an inductive sensor cannot handle.

The 84mm body length is compact for a full-featured ultrasonic unit with a display and the 400 kHz transducer; the 5-pin M12 male connector provides the two signal lines needed for the switched output and the multifunctional input that enables teach-in and synchronisation.

The integrated display is worth particular attention for a sensor in this class. Rather than requiring an external programmer or laptop software to set the switching point, the UM30-212111 allows threshold adjustment directly at the sensor using the front-panel control buttons, with the distance value shown on the display in real time.

On the production floor, this means faster commissioning, easier field adjustment when target geometry changes, and direct troubleshooting visibility without any additional tools.

Operating Modes — DtO, Window, and ObSB

The UM30-212111 supports three operating modes that are directly configurable from the display panel. In DtO (Distance to Object) mode, the sensor switches when the target enters the set switching point — the standard proximity sensing function.

Window mode defines a near and far threshold; the output switches only when the target is within the defined distance window, ignoring objects outside the window in either direction.

ObSB (Object between Sensor and Background) mode teaches the background distance first, then detects the presence of any object that appears between the sensor and the stored background — a particularly useful mode for detecting objects moving across a conveyor where the conveyor surface itself should not trigger the output.

These three modes cover the vast majority of industrial detection scenarios.

The ability to switch between them at the sensor without reprogramming the PLC or CNC is a significant commissioning and maintenance advantage.

Multi-Sensor Synchronisation — Up to 50 Units

The 5-pin M12 connector includes a synchronisation and multiplexing pin (pin 5, grey conductor) that connects multiple UM30 sensors together.

In synchronised mode, all connected sensors emit simultaneously, which prevents one sensor's sound pulse from being received by an adjacent sensor as a false detection — a common problem when multiple ultrasonic sensors operate in proximity.

In multiplex mode, sensors fire in sequence, eliminating crosstalk entirely.

Either mode scales to 50 sensors, which covers even large array installations on conveyor systems or multi-point level measurement manifolds.

FAQ

Q1: The datasheet shows 65mm as the minimum operating range, but the specification provided indicates 60mm — which is correct?

The SICK official datasheet for UM30-212111 (part no. 6037661) specifies 65mm as the start of the operating range, with the full rated range running to 350mm and the limiting range extending to 600mm.

The 60mm figure cited in some product listings is rounded down and should be treated as approximate. For applications where detection at 60–65mm is critical, test the specific unit at that distance before committing to the installation geometry.

Q2: What is the difference between the NO and NC output modes, and how is the output polarity changed?

In NO (Normally Open) mode, the PNP output switches HIGH when an object is detected within the switching point.

In NC (Normally Closed) mode, the output is HIGH when no object is detected and goes LOW when the target is present — useful for machine safety interlocks or "object missing" alarm logic without requiring PLC inversion.

The UM30-212111 allows the output polarity to be toggled through the front panel display menu without any wiring change, making it possible to adapt the sensor to the PLC's required logic without revisiting the electrical cabinet.

Q3: Can the UM30-212111 measure liquid levels reliably?

Yes. Ultrasonic sensors detect liquid surfaces reliably because sound reflects off the surface regardless of the liquid's color or transparency.

The UM30-212111 is used for level monitoring in tanks, reservoirs, and process vessels where the 65–350mm range covers the level variation of interest.

One practical consideration: foam or turbulence on the liquid surface scatters the sound wave and can cause unstable readings.

The adjustable measurement filter and foreground suppression settings accessible through the display help stabilise readings in these conditions.

Q4: What connects to pin 5 (grey conductor) and pin 2 on the 5-pin M12?

Pin 5 (grey) is the Sync/Multiplex pin — used to daisy-chain multiple UM30 sensors for synchronised or multiplexed operation, or to connect to a SICK Connect+ adapter (part 6037782) for visualisation and cloning via PC.

Pin 2 (white) is the multifunctional (MF) input, used for remote teach-in, output inversion triggering, and sensor configuration commands from the controller.

Both pins are unconnected in a single-sensor standard switching application — standard 3-wire PNP operation uses pins 1 (brown/supply+), 3 (blue/GND), and 4 (black/output) only.

Q5: How does the internal display assist with field commissioning?

During commissioning, the display shows the live measured distance in millimetres as the sensor scans.

The technician moves the target to the desired switching position, presses the teach-in button, and the sensor stores that distance as the switching threshold.

The two status LEDs confirm output state in real time.

For window mode, the near and far thresholds are individually taught by positioning the target at each boundary distance and pressing teach-in for each threshold. The display can be deactivated via the menu to reduce power consumption or prevent interference from display light in light-sensitive environments.
